Developing new nutritional strategies to reduce the occurrence of breast muscle myopathies
Since 2009, the poultry industry, and in particular the broiler sector, is faced with the emergence of multiple meat quality defects collectively known as breast muscle myopathies (BBM). These quality defects are an unintended consequence of increased genetic selection pressure to produce broiler strains with higher growth rate and increased breast meat yield. The most common of these myopathies are White Striping and Wooden or Woody Breast. These growth-related quality issues are associated with great economic losses for the industry and solutions to alleviate their prevalence and severity are needed. The exact causal factors of these myopathies are not yet fully known but, recent studies evidenced un important role of oxidative stress in their onset and progression. The recruit
